Vatican Declares Mar Mathew Makil as Venerable

Vatican Declares Mar Mathew Makil as Venerable Founder of the Sisters of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Honoured for Heroic Virtue In a moment of great joy and spiritual significance for the Syro-Malabar Church—and especially for the Sisters of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (SVM)—the Vatican has officially declared Mar Mathew Makil as Venerable, recognizing his life of heroic virtue. The decree was promulgated on May 22, 2025, by the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints with the approval of Pope Leo XIV. Mar Mathew Makil, a pioneer and spiritual father to generations, was a tireless shepherd devoted to the unity and growth of the Church. He is also the founder of the Sisters of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (SVM), a congregation committed to a life of prayer, service, and compassion—especially among women and the marginalized. As daughters of his vision, the Sisters of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary express deep gratitude to God and the Universal Church for this recognition. “This is a moment of profound pride and spiritual joy for all of us,” said the Superior General of the Congregation. “We are honoured to continue the mission he entrusted to us, and we renew our commitment to live out his legacy of love and holiness.” Born in 1851 in Manjoor, Kerala, Mar Makil was ordained a priest in 1874. He was appointed the Vicar Apostolic of Changanacherry in 1896, and later became the first bishop of the Diocese of Kottayam. He faithfully led the Church until his death in 1914. His unwavering dedication to the spiritual welfare of his flock, his promotion of education and social upliftment, and his efforts toward ecclesial harmony remain enduring examples of Christian leadership. With this declaration, Mar Mathew Makil is now officially titled "Venerable", the second step in the canonization process. The next stage, beatification, requires the recognition of a miracle attributed to his intercession.
